Tough Toys for Tough Kids (a gift guide)
I wrote about Tough Toys last year around Christmas time, but I wanted to write about them again for my All Wrapped Up gift series. My kids are very tough on toys, and all the toys on this list have survived their rigorous play time.

I've been surprised by how well the toys have kept their color even after being left in the sun for days at a time. My boys got this for Christmas last year. It has lasted so well! The boys have ridden on the top of the car carrier, have left the toys in the snow and rain, and have even used the cars as roller skates. It is a bit of a large toy if space is a problem. I think the cars are like a foot long and the carrier is about three feet. It hold lots of cars and treasures, which is perfect for preschoolers. All Safari Toys fit the category of tough toys, but am featuring the dragon because it's on Dragonfly's wish list. If we decide to buy it for her, I know the solid plastic toy will be able to withstand messy play, bath time, getting left outside, and anything else the kids can think up. Our Strider bike was a hand-me-down from a family with 4 kids. They had gotten it as a hand-me-down from a family with 5 kids. We have 3 kids, who have used the bike, and it's still going strong. Skimmer likes to ride his bike like his Dad rides the motorcycle, over railroad ties, around the yard, and off the deck. We did have to replace the seat, but as far as I know, everything else is original. The Strider Balance Bike is a great investment- grab your own by clicking on the picture.
We had tons of Duplos when I was growing up (in fact, my mom still has them), and my kids love them as well. They're durable and encourage creativity. There are Disney sets, train tracks, superhero sets, and many other themes. This classic children's toy is still going strong and makes a great gift for tough kids. When you make a list of tough toys, you have to include Tonka! My boys love the big dump trucks and use them all the time for "rough and tough construction play" (Goodnight, Goodnight, Construction Site). They're a good height to the boys to push and run behind them and have a big bed for lots of rocks, sticks, snow, and other toys. Every kid should own a truck!
